Lymphocytopenia is often present (80%), while thrombocytopenia and leukopenia are common in about a third of the cases. Further laboratory abnormalities include elevated CRP-levels, CK, LDH and D-Dimer.

Procalcitonin serum levels are typically normal, whereas elevated values are found in cases with bacterial superinfections.

Patients with severe disease had more prominent laboratory abnormalities (including lymphocytopenia, leukopenia, CRP and LDH) than those with nonsevere disease.
